9 unions of Nilphamari declared beggar-free

NILPHAMARI, July 6 (BSS): Nine unions of Kisherganj upazila under Nilphamari district has been declared as beggar-free areas. Lawmakers of Nilphamri-3 and Nilphamari-4 made the declaration at a "Rally for Humanity" (Manobatar Somabesh), attended by 916 beggars who have been taken under rehabilitation project, on Kisherganj Upazila Parishad premises.

About the declaration, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Siddiqur Rahman said the 916 beggars have been listed after a survey in three phases in the nine unions.

Later, a beggar rehabilitation committee and a fund were formed through local social workers and local lawmakers.

Two accounts were opened- one at Sonali Bank and other with Bkash, a subsidiary of Brac Bank, for forming the fund.

The 916 beggars were rehabilitated by involving them with income-generating tasks, making them member of "One House One Farm" (Ektee Bari, Ektee Khamar) project, providing them elderly allowances, widow-allowances and other facilities.
