A bright future for cultivators of orange in Tangail

TANGAIL, Jan 3: A bright future is waiting for the orange cultivators of the area. If the beautiful and tasty orange can be grown on more land, the economy of the district would be more developed in a short period by exporting it and local people can enjoy the tasty fruit and they could recover deficiency of vitamin C, said Rowshan Alam, Additional Deputy Director (ADD Horti culture) of DAE Tangail.

He said, soil and weather of the two upazila Shakhipur and Ghatail upazila of the district, especially Shakhipur upazila, is very much suitable for orange cultivation. Orange cultivation began in that area in 2013. That time it was in a limited area but now-a-days the cultivating area is increasing everyday. After a good result of orange cultivation from the beginning the DAE officials would monitor the progress of rearing and nursing the saplings. He said need based technology support also be provided to sapling recipients.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Tangail sources said that farmers of five upazilas of the district have started orange cultivation in a limited area on test basis from 2013. Among the upazilas farmers of Ghatail cultivated 7 hectares of land, Nagorpur upazila 2 hectares, Mirzapur upazila 3 hectares, Modhupur upazila 6 hectares and Shakhipur upazila 20 hectares of land. Of these Ghatal, Modhupur and Shakhipur upazila is read soil and mountain area of the district.

An orange grower Habil Miah, son of Naim Uddin Miah under Shakhipur upazila of the district said about three years ago the Shakhipur upazila DAE office provided sapling of orange to him and he has planted it on his 40 decimal of land. From the beginning of plantation it has growing well and that sapling now became a small tree and producing beautiful fruit orange.

Another orange grower Bhashan Miah, son of Hashem Miah under Shakhipur upazila said, our local orange is tasty and as like as good in price at local market.

Another farmer of the area said orange farming can change their fortune for its high demand and a good market price. It is a problem that, the growers have to wait for three years for feedback from the date of plantation of sapling.

Mostafa Kamal, accountant of citrus project of DAE Tangail said, it is good sign for us that, the orange cultivation gaining popularity among local people. We are trying our best to support them in every possible way to encourage for the cultivation of it on a large scale.

The DAE providing the orange cultivators fertiliser, insect killer, spray, limestone, and other orange cultivation related agri - inputs in free of cost and provided training to the orange cultivator to cultivate it perfectly. Because the perfect cultivation procedure is the first condition to get the bumper production of the corp.
