Acute shortage of teachers at SZRMCH

BOGURA, Oct 12: Academic activities of the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital (SZRMCH) have been disrupted due to acute shortage of teachers.

Some 54 posts out of 153 including lecturer, assistance professor, associate professor and professor remain vacant, causing suffering for the students of all departments.

According to college administration sources, the SZRMC was established in 1992.

The total number of students in the college is currently about one thousand. Apart from Bangladesh, foreign students from India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have enrolled themselves in MBBS courses.

In addition to MBBS degree, diploma courses in Child Health, Dermatology and Venereology and Orthopedics are also offered.

The guest teachers are talking classes of some departments to fill up the lack of regular teachers.

During a recent visit, this correspondent came to know that some 13 posts of professor out of 23 posts are vacant, 21 post of associate professor out of 39 are vacant, 16 post of assistant professor out of 56 are also vacant and some four posts of lecturer out of 31 are still vacant.

Two departments - Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Neurology - are running without any regular teachers. They depend on the guest teachers, some students said.

Nine departments - Forensic Medicine, Transfusion Medicine, Radio Therapy, Respiratory Medicine, Dentistry, Hematology, Hematology, Endocrinology and Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy - are also running with only a teacher.

In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the post of professor is vacant for a long time. Two of the three posts of associate professor have long been vacant.

The entire department is running with only assistant professor Sabrina Yasmin.

Although there are two posts of associate and assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, it has been vacant for a long time. This section is currently running without a regular teacher.

The same image is also in the Pediatric Nephrology Department. Two posts of associate and assistant professor in this department, but for a long time there are no teachers in these positions.

The vacancy of a professor post is simultaneously vacant in the anatomy department. The Physiology Department has one professor, two associate professors and one assistant professor.

Three posts of professor, associate professor and assistant professor are vacant in the Department of Community Medicine. The Department of Forensic Medicine is running with only one lecturer.

The students said that the position of professor and associate professor in the department of pharmacology has been vacant for a long time.

The pathology department has one professor and the pathologist has two vacancies. Two posts of Assistant Professor in Microbiology have long been vacant.

The two posts of professor and associate professor are vacant in the eye department. One of the three posts of assistant professor is vacant. The only position of the professor in the nose and throat section is empty.

One of the posts of associate professor in Radiology is vacant. The radiotherapy department is running with the only assistant professor, Mobasheer-ur-Rahman. The only post of professor in the Department of Anesthesiology has long been vacant.

The Department of Respiratory Medicine is running with the only an assistant professor, Jibesh Kumar Pramanik.

The only post of Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine is vacant. The post of Associate Professor in the Department of burn and plastic surgery is vacant since the establishment of the college.

The posts of Assistant Professor in the two posts in the dental department have long been vacant. A post of assistant professor in the Department of Neuro Surgery is also vacant.

The Department of Hematology is run by the only Assistant Professor. There are three vacancies for professor and associate professor in three positions in the Department Of Haematology.

Vice Principal Rezaul Alam Juwel said, "We send letters seeking adequate teachers to the Ministry of Health and the Department of Health every month to resolve the teacher crisis. The crisis is causing serious problem for both the students and collage management", he added.
