JAMALPUR, May 14 (BSS): The Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) will procure 240 metric tonnes of wheat seeds from farmers in Jamalpur and Sherpur districts this year.

According to the Contract Growers Office of BADC, its seed wing will collect two varieties of wheat seeds - 190 tonnes of BARI-25 and 50 tonnes of BARI-28 - from 91 farmers at Tk 32 per kg.

Farmers cultivated wheat on about 312 acres of land in the two districts this year. Of the land, 40 acres were brought under wheat cultivation in Balaram Char and Napiter Char villages in Sherpur while 272 acres in Sabilapur and Mahmudpur villages of Melandaha upazila and Sanandabari village of Dewanganj upazila in Jamalpur.

BADC Deputy Director (Seed Wing) Khagendra Chandra said contract farmers were provided training on wheat cultivation.

Farmers earlier took preventive measures against wheat blast disease and that is why no blast disease was found in wheat this year, he said, adding that they have already supplied 200 tonnes of wheat seeds to the BADC.
