FARIDPUR, Feb 27: Beekeepers of Alfadanga upazila in the district are passing busy time collecting honey from the bee boxes.

Sources said, honeybee farming is gaining popularity in the area for market demand. Farmers here generally set up the boxes beside the mustard croplands and around the litchi trees.

Every season a huge amount of honey is collected across the district.

Farmer Shahidul Islam of Lungia village said beekeeping is the only source of his living. He said, "I have six bee boxes. I meet all my family expenses from the sale of honey."

Shahidul Islam said beekeepers usually collect honey during monsoon. Local bee farmers also set their boxes beside the seasonal crop flowers, including black cumin and coriander. After collecting honey there, they move to Rajshahi, Natore, Dinajpur during the litchi season.

A local man who came to buy honey from bee farmers said black cumin flower honey is good in quality and has a good market demand as well. "I purchase honey directly from the farmers to get pure ones."

Upazila Agriculture Officer Ripon Prasad Saha said Alfadanga upazila is well-known for producing quality honey. Farmers set their boxes beside mustard, black cumin, lentils, onion, coriander and khesari fields so that the bees can collect nectar from the flowers.

Bees also help pollinate the grain while collecting nectar. It also increases crop yield by 20 per cent to 30 per cent.
