MAGURA, Apr 16: This story is about a beggar who is now solvent after giving up begging. The name of this successful woman is Monoara Begum.
Monoara lives in village Shibrampur under Magura sadar upazila. Monoara's husband passed away in 2010 after a cardiac attack.
Finding no other alternative, Monoara started to beg for survival. She along with her three children was living from hand to mouth from begging.
In January of 2018 with the help of Rova foundation and financial support of upazila administration she brought three goats and started to sell milk.
When contacted Monoara said, “Now everyday I purchase 50 to 52 kg milk from different areas of my village and sell those at Notun bazaar of Magura town. I purchase milk at Tk 50 per kg while sell at Tk 60 per kg. That is I make Tk 10 profit from per kg milk. In this way my total earning per day is at least Tk 500.”
“On the other hand I sold the three goats I had purchased during the last Eid ul Azha at Tk 25 thousand. At present I am rearing six goats which I purchased form my savings. I hope to sell these goats in the ensuing Eid-ul-Azha”, she added. With a proud smile on her face Monoara said, “Earlier I begged to people and people called me beggar. But now I am successful milk trader. Day by day I am being more solvent.”
When contacted Rova foundation executive director Kazi Kamruzzaman said after providing Monoara with financial support we kept her under close observation and gave her proper advice and technical support regarding her milk trading and goat rearing.
Leaving begging Monoara is now enjoying a new life with social dignity and financial solvency. When contacted, Magura sadar upazila Nirbahi officer Md Abu Sufian said, “Begging is a curse to our society. In the meantime, we have declared Magura as a beggar-free district. We are proud and encouraged with the success of Monoara.”
