NILPHAMARI, June 11: Cottage industries of bell metal in Gomnati union council under Domar upazila of the district is on the verge of extinction.

Household material made of bell metal and brass such as basin, candle stand, dish, flower vase, jar, jug, kettle, lamp, lock, oil pot, pan, pitcher, plate, saucepan, tub and other utensils were traditionally made in Gomnati.

Materials like chess board, dice, legs of chair, even throne of the kings, different idols of Gods and materials of rituals were also made of bell metal.

The products are very artistic, refined and sophisticated.

Sources said some year back American Cultural Center of American Embassy and Bengal Gallery of fine arts jointly organised a fair of bell metal and brass products.

Some exportable artistic products were displayed there.

Sources said Gomnati has a traditional base of artistic craftsmen.

Patronization of the government may revive the dying industries there which may earn immense foreign currency by exporting those items.

Abdul Aziz, a resident of Gomnati union, said there are nearly 25 families in the union who still make some products of bell metal.
