NARSINGDI, Apr 06: The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) authority is dredging the Arial Kha to restore the river's navigability.
The dredging of the river is part of the initiative of the organisation to dredge 53 river routes, with 24 routes in the first phase.
Sources said, the once fast-flowing river will be made 120 feet wide and nine feet deep. River vessels with 2.75 metre draught will be able to ply the river round the year.
People of the area said, the dredging will not only help lessen the impact of floods but also provide water for irrigating the crop fields.
It will help lower the cost of transportation of crops produced in the area as well as that of bringing in daily necessities from the cities and towns, they maintained.
