Boatmen observe hunger strike in Chattogram

CHATTOGRAM, August 25: Several hundreds of boatmen observed day long hunger strike on Tuesday at Sadarghat area in the port city.
The demanded the cancellation of leasing out ghats to businessmen and return the ghats to the boatmen.
They also insisted on punishing the chief revenue officer of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mofidul Haque who allegedly leased the ghats to one Haji Shafi by taking bribes and violating the government rules.
The Karnaphuli Majhi Kallyan Samity Federation observed the day long hunger strike from 7 am to 5 pm on the day.
The movement of shampans (boats) on the Karnaphuli river remained at halt for the whole day due to the hunger strike of the boatmen. At that time, the boatmen held rally on the boats on the Karnaphuli river.
The rally was led by president of the federation SM Pear Ali.
