BOGRA, Dec 27: Thousands of marginal potato growers in Bogra are optimistic of getting a bumper production in the current season.
The cultivators are satisfied with the timely supply of necessary agri-inputs, said sources.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office, over 56,000 hectares of land have been brought under potato cultivation with the production target of over 0.3 million tonnes.
Farmer Yakub Ali (32) of Kuraher village under Dupchanchia upazila said he has brought some 45 decimals of land under potato farming spending Tk 12000 and is expecting to get over 50 maunds of fresh yield this season.
But the dense fog has been engulfing the district since last few days made the farmers anxious as the crops may get affected with various diseases.
"I am expecting to get 120 maunds of potato if the weather remains friendly till February. But I may need to spend extra money for insecticides if the fog situation continues", said Aminur Rahman (45), a farmer of Kahaloo upazila.
Protul Chandra Sarker, Deputy Director of DAE, said the farmers have been advised to use both organic and chemical fertilisers simultaneously to make the cultivation a grand success.
"We are also monitoring the root level growers", the DAE official added.
