Bogura bottle gourd growers happy with good production, price

BOGURA, July 21: The farmers of the district are happy over the bumper bottle-gourd production this season.

A good number of grassroots farmers said they are making a handsome profit from the sale of the popular vegetable this season.

During a recent visit to Dupchanchia upazila, this correspondent found a large bottle gourd was selling at Tk 60 to Tk 80, a medium one at Tk 50 to Tk 55 and a small one at Tk 30 to Tk 40 in the local markets.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, bottle gourd is popular among the growers in Adamdigi, Kahaloo, Shaja-hanpur, Dhunot, Shariakandi, Shonatola, Gabtoly, Shibganj, Sherpur, Dupchanchia and Sadar upazilas in the district and around 300 hectares of land were brought under the production of the item this season.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said the department provided all necessary support to make the cultivation programme a success.

Abdur Rahman, a farmer of Gangnagar village under Shibganj upazila, said he has cultivated bottle gourd on 22 decimals of land spending Tk 3,300.

The peasant said he has already made a profit of Tk 7,000 and expecting to earn Tk 10,000 more.

Market sources said locally-produced bottle gourd is also sent to different wholesale market across the country.
