BOGURA, Oct 19: The owners of vegetable nurseries in Shajahanpur upazila of Bogura district are seeking government patronage to expand their initiative.

Sources said the initiative has opened a new horizon to the prosperity of the farmers and created a large number of employment for farm labourers.

All kinds of healthy hybrid vegetable saplings are produced here. Growers from Sirajganj, Pabna, Manikganj, Jamalpur, Tangail, Natore, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh visit the place regularly to collect saplings.

The production and marketing of all sorts of vegetable saplings, including advanced varieties of cauliflower, cabbage, tomato and eggplant are helping improve the financial condition of the farmers.

Farmer Azizil Haque at Chupinagar village said, "We produce quality pepper varieties like Green Super, Light Master, Nova, Lanka-1820, Star Plus, Tej -100."

Amzad Hossain, proprietor of the cultivator Seed Bhandar and Nursery, said more than 200 nurseries have grown in Shahnagar and its adjoining areas over the past few years as vegetable production has become more profitable than other crops.

Over 3,000 labourers including women are working in the nurseries. Apart from the locals, a good number of grassroots people from Gaibandha and Rangpur district are also working in the nurseries.

The number of such type of nurseries is increasing every year in the area, some farmers said.

Khurshed Alam, proprietor of Khushboo Nursery, said suitable soil and skilled growers are necessary to produce healthy vegetable seedlings.

Upazila Agriculture Department provides all necessary support to the sapling growers.

It also arranges farmers' meetings, field-day and garden meetings and distribute leaflets to raise awareness among the farmers.
