Brass, bell metal industries on the verge of extinction

RANGPUR, Aug 28: The traditional brass and bell metal industries of Rangpur district are now on the verge of extinction.

Many artisans of brass and bell metal industries of the district have been compelled to forsake heir ancestral and traditional profession as the demand of their products has come down sharply.

More than 80 per cent of people engaged in brass and bell metal industries have already relinquished their profession.

Once upon a time the region was well-known for brass and bell metal industries. Then the household appliances and utensils made of brass and bell metals were used in every family in urban and rural areas of the district.

These utensils made of brass and bell metals were very much liked by the aristocratic people.

The artisans used to make brass plate, pitcher, bowl, dish, spoon, glass and all most all sorts of kitchenware and utensils.

These were widely used by the Hindu families. Flowers vases, Statues, window and door panes, locks, hinges, toys and ornaments made of brass and bell metals were popular among the people.

Brass and bell metal industries began to decline in the locality with massive production of aluminum and plastic items, which were comparatively cheap in markets, sources said.

The choice of the people turned to aluminum glass, plastic and melamine that were very easy for washing and maintenance.

Sources said the brass and bell metal products were free of health hazard. The users of such products were completely free from the diseases like Acidity, Stomach problems.

The artisans said due to scarcity of ingredients like copper and zinc such industries are now on the verge of ruination.

The surviving artisans of the brass and bell metal industries under the district demanded financial support and patronisation from the government to save the industries from extinction.
