BOGURA, Apr 27: Hundreds of brinjal cultivators in the district are making good profit this season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), farming of the popular vegetable has been expanding across the district over the last few years.
DAE officials said the department encourages the grassroots farmers by providing all necessary support so that the farmers can get good yield.
Around 300 hectares of land in Dupchanchia, Sherpur, Sonatola, Shibganj, Kahaloo, Nandigram, Shajahanpur, Dhunot and Sadar upazilas have been come under the production of brinjal.
Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said cultivators in the area grow quality brinjal. They are happy for getting fair price of their produce.
Farmer Abdul Wadud of Shibganj upazila said, "We can make more profit growing the item in summer than in winter. I have already made a handsome profit this time."
A maund of brinjal is selling at Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,100 in the retail market and Tk 1,900 to Tk 1,950 in the wholesale market.
Traders from neighbouring districts visit the area and purchase the vegetable from the growers at a wholesale rate.
Amrul Islam of Sonatola upazila said, "I have cultivated brinjal on 22 decimals of land this season spending Tk 6,200."
"I have already sold around five maunds of my produce at Tk 15,900."
DAE officials said growers usually invest around Tk 16,000 to Tk 19,000 to produce the item on a bigha of land.
