GOPALGANJ, Feb 08: The cultivation of 'green carpet' and 'early green' broccoli varieties is gaining in popularity among farmers under Sadar upazila of the district this season.
Rita Kirtunia (40), a female farmer of Silna village, said she has cultivated 'early green' broccoli on 15 decimals of land this winter season, but its yield is satisfactory.
"I'll get about 2,700 pieces of broccoli, which price is about Tk 60,000 and the production cost is Tk 27,000."
One piece of broccoli is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 at local market, she also says.
Pradip Halder, sub-assistant agriculture officer under Raghunathpur union of Sadar upazila, said a total of 05 acres (local 10 bighas) of land have been brought into broccoli cultivation.
Bishnu Bala (35) of Digarkul village of Raghunathpur union said he has cultivated 'green carpet' broccoli on 7 decimals of land this winter.
"I've already sold broccoli for Tk 15,000 and also will sell it for Tk 10,000," the farmer said.
Mafroza Akther, upazila agriculture officer in Gopalganj Sadar, told the FE that soil and weather are favourable for farming the broccoli varieties. Farmers are more interested in broccoli farming.
About 08 acres of land have been brought under broccoli cultivation is Gopalganj Sadar Upazila and nearly 200 farmers are involved in the farming of the vegetable, he added.
Provash Bala (49), another farmer of the same village, said he has cultivated 'green carpet' broccoli on 10 decimals of land this winter season.
As broccoli contains high calorie, the city people prefer the vegetable. Now, the farming of this cash crop is increasing day by day in this region.
Sanjoy Kumar Kundu, additional deputy director at Khamarbari in Gopalganj, told the FE that farmers are interested in farming broccoli as they get good profits in a short duration.
He also said about 10 acres of land have been brought under broccoli cultivation in five upazilas of the district with a production target of 60 tonnes this winter season.
Apurba Biswas (28), another farmer of Silna village, said he has cultivated 'green carpet' on 7 decimal of land.
"Its harvest has begun and one piece of broccoli is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 in local markets."
Farmers produce 180 pieces of broccoli on one decimal of land at a cost of nearly Tk 1,700. So, a farmer gets profit of Tk 1,600.
