MAGURA, Dec 09: Zinc-enriched BRRI-74 rice has brought a new hope among the farmers in the district.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) is the inventor of the paddy.

A total of 100 hectares of land have been brought under the production of BRRI-74 paddy in the district this season.

The paddy variety is highly productive. Around 3.4 tonnes of paddy can be produced in a hectare of land. This paddy is less vulnerable to cold weather.

Per kg BRRI-74 paddy contains 25 mg zinc. Moreover, it absorbs protein which is helpful in removing malnutrition.

A local NGO has distributed seeds of the paddy variety among 100 farmers of the district at free of cost.

DAE training officer Shohrab Hossein said growers should expand the farming of BRRI 74 paddy to boost production.
