MANIKGANJ, Sept 02 (BSS): Papaya growers in Manikganj district are expressing joy as they witness a bumper harvest this season, coupled with favourable market prices.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the target for papaya cultivation this year was set at 850 hectares with an expected yield of 17,000 tonnes. However, both the cultivation area and production have surpassed expectations, officials confirmed.

In Singair upazila, vast stretches of farmland have turned lush green with thriving papaya plantations. Farmers are currently busy harvesting their crops and transporting them to various parts of the country, including Dhaka.

Md Juran Khan, 40, and Bhanu Bibi, 36, from Char Azimpur village each cultivated papaya on five bighas of land. They anticipate earning a profit of Tk 800,000 to 900,000 this season.

During a recent visit to the area, numerous buyers and trucks were seen waiting to purchase freshly harvested papayas directly from the farmers. Meanwhile, workers were busy sorting and packaging the produce in local storage facilities.

Md Mohi Uddin (52), another local cultivator, noted that papaya continues to enjoy strong demand in the market. "Currently, papaya is being sold at Tk 20 to 25 per kilogram, which ensures a good profit margin," he said.

Dr Robiah Noor Ahmed, Deputy Director of the DAE, stated that the soil in Singair upazila is particularly well-suited for papaya cultivation. "This natural advantage contributes to both the quality and quantity of papaya grown in the region," she added.
