BOGRA, Jan 13: A good number of peasants of the district are happy over the bumper production and a good market price of water spinach (Kolmishak) this season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said though the vegetable grow round the year but winter season is the suitable time for grow well. "We have provided all support to the growers to make the programme a success", they added.
"The farmer have grown the crops abundantly after tilling the land with fartiliser, said farmer Masudur Rahman of Utrail village under Kahaloo upazila of the district. He again said, "I made a good profit this current season as the price of the vegetable is high than the last year."
Farmer can make over Tk 40,000 to Tk 45,000 from a bigha of land if the weather condition remains favourable. To cultivate water spinach on a bigha of land, peasants need Tk 5000 to Tk 6000 for production cost.
The wholesalers visit the root level crop land in a view to purchase from the farmers and send the crops to the different adjacent region mitigating local demand, said wholesaler Mamunur Rashid, 34, under Dupchanchia upazila of the district. If he has given measure loan facilities, he will expand the business next year, he added.
Due to rampant demand of the crops the farmers of the region have shown more interest to grow the crops. They are also getting good market price and bumper production. Each kg of fresh vegetable is being sold from Tk 20 to Tk 24 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 15 to Tk 18.
