SYLHET, Dec 04: Citizen leaders at an exchange of views meeting with the Water Development Board (WDB) officials on Monday demanded immediate start of schemes like crop protection embankment and others in the haor areas of Sunamganj district for saving Boro paddy.

Dhurjoi Kumar Bosu, president of the conscious citizens' committee chaired the meeting while executive engineers of WDB Abu Baker Siddique (Sunamganj division-I) and Khushi Mohan Sarker (Division- II) attended the event, among others.

Former principal of the Sunamganj Sarkari College Porimal Kanti Dey presented a paper on ‘Good governance in ensuring climate change funds: expectation and recommendations of citizens' committee’.

He said the cross section people expect the authority to take steps for starting reconstruction of the damaged embankments and others in time and to finishing in time so that even the early floods or rain could not affect those. Transparency should be ensured in forming the project implementation committees and in the process of schemes' execution, he added.

Besides, he laid emphasis on sufficient transparency in the whole process since there had been a number of allegations during the last year's dry season when crop protection schemes were taken up or executed in the district. Even some people were sued.

About Tk 9.0 million has been targeted for the schemes numbering about 550 schemes in the district this year, informed an official at the WDB.

WDB has set the time for crop protection embankment works from December 15 to February 28, the officials said further.
