JOYPURHAT, June 11: Commercial guava cultivation has brought financial solvency to many poor families in the district.

Peasants are expanding guava cultivation in the area due to high demand. Growers are making high profit spending a little amount of money.

Shahdat Hossain of Khetlal upazila said, "I planted around 400 saplings on 23 decimals of land two year back spending Tk 33,000.

Most of tress have started fruiting this season."

Guava grows round the year but rainy season is suitable for it.

To cultivate the fruit farmers use urea, khoil, TSP, potash and organic fertilisers.

To keep the fruit fresh and healthy growers have to use insecticide minimum 5 to 10 times.

To produce a kg of fruit, a farmer spends Tk 30 to Tk 40 but sells the produce at Tk 80 to Tk 100.

Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said, "We have provided all sorts of support to the farmers in the area as commercial guava farming is gaining popularity in the district."
