SIRAJGANJ, Nov 20: Commercial red spinach cultivation is gaining popularity in the district.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Azizur Rahman said a good number of grassroots level growers have attained financial solvency by growing the leafy vegetable on a vast tract of land.
He said the item grows well in the district. Moreover, cultivators get fair price of the vegetable.
The Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) supplied quality seeds among the farmers, the official said.
"I have cultivated red spinach on 11 decimals of land this season investing Tk 4,000," said farmer Kalam Uddin of Royganj upazila.
The grower said he has already earned Tk 12,000 from the produce and expecting to make Tk 10,000 more this season.
Each kg of red spinach is selling at Tk 25 to Tk 30 in the retail market and Tk 20 to Tk 55 in the wholesale market.
Deputy Director of DAE Arshad Ali said the farming is gaining momentum across the region due to its lucrative profit.
