SYLHET, Nov 07: The construction work on the long-awaited Khasiamara Bridge in Doarabazar upazila of Sunamganj district is going on at a snail's pace, causing immense sufferings for local people.
Locals allege that over two years have elapsed though the bridge's construction work has not completed.
The construction work on the 75-metre bridge at Alipur Tengratila Kheyaghat started on February 02, 2022 at a cost of Tk 42.7 million.
But, its work was suspended for about a year due to the contractor's negligence, leaving 50,000 local people in great trouble.
There had been no monitoring, locals alleged.
Meanwhile, sufferings of locals have mounted as they have to use small ferry boats to cross the bathe river.
The pillars and some works are clearly visible though work is going slowly as the contractor suspended it for unknown reasons, locals alleged.
Some people of Alipur village said traders as well as common people are suffering much due to poor progress of the work by the contractor for unknown reasons.
A teacher of a nearby primary school said minor children have to suffer much as they cross the river, risking their lives.
Sufferings of local people know no bounds during monsoon seasons.
A representative from the contracting firm claimed that the bridge's work was suspended due to a rise in the prices of construction materials.
An official at local LGED said the contractor issued a written letter to complete the bridge's work immediately.
"We hope it will be completed in months," he added.
