BOGURA, Sep 24: Creeper arum cultivation has brought smile on the faces of hundreds of grassroots farmers in the district.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said commercial farming of creeper arum is popular in the area. A good number of farmers have attained self-reliance by growing the popular vegetable.

Farmers make handsome profit every season. The department provides all necessary support in this connection, the sources added.

Creeper arum cultivation is increasing across the district due to good market price, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.

Low lying crop land is suitable for the farming of the item.

Around Tk 35,000 to Tk 40,000 is needed to grow the item in a hectare of land.

Each kg of the vegetable is being sold between Tk 45 and Tk 60 in the local retail market.

"I have cultivated the vegetable on 30 decimals of land this season spending Tk 6000," said farmer Arun Kumar Das of Shibganj upazila.

He again said, "I have already sold some 20 maunds of crops at Tk 32000."

Deputy director of DAE Protul Chadra Sarker said, "Modern farming methods help boost the production of creeper arum.

The farming area is expanding due to high production, good market price and low production cost."
