CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Dec 25: Orange cultivation is gaining popularity in the district.
Taking suggestion from the officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) some peasants brought their cropland under orange farming in 2015.
The plants begin flowering from June to July and growers begin to harvest the fruit from the last week of November.
Dr Saifur Rahman, deputy director of Horticulture Centre, said soil in the Barind region is suitable for orange cultivation.
Locally-produced oranges are sweet and bright yellow in colour and size is also attractive.
Each hali (four pieces) of fresh orange is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 32 in the retail market.
Growers usually apply pheromone traps in the orange orchards.
Motiur Rahman said he collected orange saplings from Jashore district to cultivate the item on experiential basis.
He said most of the orange growers here are getting good yield.
Horticulturist of DAE Mahmudul Hasan said a good number of farmers of the district have started farming orange in the high land instead of growing mango.
Deputy Director of DAE Md Munjurul Huda said orange cultivation requires land with good drainage facility.
The Barind region is suitable for growing the popular tasty and juicy fruit.
The official said if proper irrigation could be ensured, the plants can give good yield as the fruit is less vulnerable to pests and disease.
