Cumilla farmers produce pesticide-free vegetables

CUMILLA, Sept 07: Farmers of 21 villages under Burichang upazila in the district are producing pesticide free vegetables.

A good number of farmers said they are producing fresh vegetables with the help of the PAGE Development Centre of PKSF.

Cultivators in Saidpur, Jangalia, Nimsar, Kedarpur, Shahdwip Bagh, Manasan, Halgaon, Panchkitta, Kemtali, Kalirbazar, Kakiyachar, Chargaon, Changacha, Chikutia, Mithnama, Kabila, Krishnapur, Korapai, Harihalpara, Loharchar and Govindpur areas under the upazila are growing varieties of vegetable without using any pesticide.

Din Mohammad, an officer of the PAGE Development Centre, said till June this year, 0.14 kgs of vegetable like broccoli, red cabbage, turnip, carrot, watermelon and capsicum were produced in the upazila.

Lokman Hakim, executive director of the centre, said: "We use urea granules in producing vegetables. Besides, vermicompost is also used in the field."

Mosleh Uddin, deputy director of Agriculture Department of PAGE Development Centre, said, "We started farming vegetables by applying the method in the Suyagazi and Bagmara areas of Sadar South upazila in July 2014."

Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Abul Fazal Mir said it is good that people here can consume vegetables which are safe.
