SYLHET, Jan 18: Harvest of the much-awaited Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) paddy is already complete in Sylhet division. The region's total yield has been estimated to be 1005,644 tonnes of rice, an official told this correspondent on Thursday.

According to a report prepared by the DAE showed the yield includes 340,200 tonnes in Sylhet, 262897 tonnes in Moulvibazar, 216,482 tonnes in Habiganj and 186,065 tonnes in Sunamganj district, said additional director of DAE Sylhet divisional office Md Altabur Rahman.

Although there had been severe floods in all the four districts and sporadic pest attack on places during the season, most of the farmers managed to overcome the trouble and transplanted for the crop second time, the officials informed.

After all these, a good crop had already been achieved this time while in total 387,150 hectares were cultivated, the official said. It includes 140,245 hectares in Sylhet, 96,435 hectares in Moulvibazar, 75,500 hectares in Habiganj and 74,970 hectares in the district of Sunamganj.

The season's target was however set earlier at 371,564 hectares to produce 952,812 metric tonnes of rice, the official said further, the yield is surpassed.

It is statable here that severe and prolonged floods this season had damaged Transplanted Aman crops affecting a total of 43,782 farmers in the division. Had there been no trouble, the farmers would have better crops, a number of farmers said.

Waterlogging for longer period this year on croplands in Moulvibazar district areas had also caused huge loss as the farmers failed farming their lands.
