Deluge prompts closure of 167 educational institutions in Tangail

TANGAIL, July 29: About 167 educational institutions of flood affected upazilas of the district have been closed as water entered their school premises.

Teachers and students of the closed institutions are passing their idle time in an uncertainty as final exam of the educational institutions knocking at the door.

Of the closed institutions, 24 are in Kalihati, 35 in Tangail sadar, 7 in Delduar, 24 in Gopalpur, 4 in Ghatail, 37 in Bhuapur, 12 in Bashail, 24 in Nagorpur upazila.

Four primary schools of Bhuapur upazila and one primary school of Kalihati upazila have been swallowed by the river, Education office sources said.

District education office sources said that damage of the institutions would be assessed once the floodwater recedes and quick repairs would be done then, he added.

Office of the educational institutions Tangail sources said that many institutions are now under flood water and some are being used as flood shelters and some others have got structural damage.

Sources informed that different char and river basin areas of the affected upazilas such as Bhuapur , Kalihati, Nagorpur, Tangail sadar, Gopalpur and Ghatail have been submerged by flood water.

Meanwhile, flood situation is still not out of danger, water of the river Jamuna is increasing in the Sirajganj point, flooding new areas every day.

District education officer Laila Khanom expressed the hope that the academic activities of the institutions will resume after the recession of flood water. Besides, extra classes and other educational activities would be taken to cover the time lost which will encourage the students and teachers, she added.
