OUR CORRESPONDENT | February 12, 2025 00:00:00

PABNA, Feb 11: Professor Ali Riaz, head of the Constitutional Reform Commission and Distinguished Professor at Illinois State University in the United States, said on Tuesday that the discrimination, which has been going on for years, would not be eliminated just through sacrificing lives.

He made the remarks while addressing an orientation programme of the 2024-25 academic year of Pabna Science and Technology University in the afternoon.

"The discrimination, which we are talking about today, the movement for which people gave their lives, the demand for which people gave their lives, there is no reason to think that it will be achieved tomorrow."

Many are getting disappointed because so many lives have lost, so much has happened, but the discrimination is not decreasing, he also said.

"The inequality, that has been created over the years, has been created structurally over the ages, which has been perpetuated through institutions, there is no reason to think that we can achieve all of them immediately just by sacrificing our lives."

Pabna Science and Technology University vice-chancellor Prof Dr SM Abdul Awal presided over the programme.

Maulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology vice-chancellor Prof Dr Anwarul Azim Akhand, Islamic University vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Nasrullah and Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology vice-chancellor Prof Dr SM Abdur Razzak, among others, also spoke.
