SYLHET, Oct 26: Works on an important regional and border road in Sunamganj district, Doarabazar-Baliura road had been facing unwanted delay due to negligence of the concerned firm causing much distress to the locals.

They apprehend it will not be possible to finish the job within the scheduled period ending in June 2020 as the works remained suspended for long.

Banshtola area of Doarabazar upazila on the Meghalaya border is known as a tourist spot as a war memorial had been constructed near the foot of Meghalaya hills. It was a sub-sector headquarter during the War of Liberation. Bodies of many Freedom Fighters were buried.

Besides, the road is used by the inhabitants of villages in Bhoglabazar and Narsinghapur unions alongside part of Noarai union of the adjacent Chhatak upazila. Some villages of Doarabazar sadar union have to use the important road as well.

A construction firm of Dhaka was awarded the road reconstruction work in November last year. But, they started the works haphazardly causing much trouble for the inhabitants of the neighbouring areas.

Some construction tools and materials are kept on the road at places and there has yet been no work except the 700 feet from the British point, said a number of locals.

The local lawmaker and others had already been informed of the matter, they said, adding, the locals' suffering should be mitigated as soon as possible by finishing the road works.

Union Parishad chairman Jashim Ahmed Chowdhury said the matter had been brought to the notice of Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner and raised at the district coordination committee. The lawmaker had assured of asking the contracting firm about the delay and poor progress.

However, a field supervisor of the contractor alleged "some locals had caused trouble for us. Besides, some materials had been stolen from the site by some locals."

An official at the LGED said that they had already informed the higher authorities about the negligence of contracting firm. They should finish the works as soon as possible as the locals had been suffering extremely due to the work suspension for long.
