RANGPUR, Oct 06: Erosion by the Dhudkumar river in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram district rendered around 200 families homeless at Pikerchhara, Sonahat and Char Bhurungamari unions in the last couple of weeks.

Besides, hundreds of acres of cultivable lands and large number of trees have been devoured by the river, sources alleged.

Because of massive wearing away many establishments including graveyard, mosque, and dwelling houses are now on the verge erosion, local sources said.

Expressing disappointment a number of erosion-hit people said they did not think earlier that they would lose their houses and property in the river.

A good number of people of the river bank areas are shifting at different places to escape the erosion. Many people of the areas are passing days in anxiety, sources informed.

Locals apprehended massive loss, if the river continues to wreak havoc for next one or two weeks.

Many affected people alleged that they are yet to get any relief items from either the government or non-government organisations. Some victims said the relief goods they received were inadequate.

In this situation the local people urged the government to take necessary steps immediately to prevent river erosion in the areas so that they can save their lives and property from destruction.

Source at Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) office, Kurigram said necessary steps have been taken to prevent further erosion of the river in the areas. The work of dumping around 5,500 geo bags has already begun to prevent erosion, sources added.
