Excellent flowering raises hopes among litchi growers

MAGURA, Mar 13: Excellent litchi flowering has raised hopes among the growers across the district.

With the advent of spring, litchi tress have taken a new look with ample flowers. Cultivators are expecting a bumper production of the juicy fruit this season.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura sources said litchi is grown in around 2,000 orchards in the district.

Isakhada, Alamkhali, Rautara, Kanchanpur, Kashinathpur, Hazipur, Raghobdair, Alaipur and Beroil villages are well-known for growing quality litchi.

China-3, Bombay, Mozaffarpuri, Hazrapuri and Madrazi are most popular varieties among the cultivators.

DAE officials said Magura growers expect Tk 250 million profit from the fruit this season.

Jalil Sarder of Rautara village under Magura Sadar said he has a litchi orchard on two bighas of land.

He said, "I am expecting Tk 0.1 million profit this season."

Trader Golam Nobi from Faridpur district said he has purchased a litchi orchard of four bighas of land in Alamkhali village under Magura Sadar upazila at Tk 0.15 million.

"If weather remains favourable, I shall be able to make a profit of Tk 0.1 million."

Magura DAE official Ruhul Amin said, "We suggest the farmers to take care of their litchi orchard regularly. We also asked them to set up pheromone traps in orchards to save produces from insect attack."
