JOYPURHAT, Feb 24: Excellent growth of onion plants on a vast tract of land across all the five upazilas of the district is predicting a bumper production of the item this season.

Repeated bumper yield and fair market price encourage the farmers to expand the farming of the spice crop, said farmer Harun or Rashid of Sadar upazila.

"We expect a good output this season also. If the weather remains favourable, farmers will start harvesting the item within next couple of weeks", he added.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, over 1,200 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation this season.

It is 200 hectares of land higher than the target fixed by the DAE.

Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Muriate of Potash (MoP) fertilisers were distributed among the grassroots farmers as incentive, DAE official added.

Besides, quality seeds were also distributed among the farmers to make the farming programme a success, they added.

Generally, the farmers sow the seeds in the last week of December. The crop can be harvested after 80 days of its cultivation.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman said onion farming is a profitable venture.

Growers should expand the production to make more profit, he added.

Farmer Abdul Mannan of Akkelpur upazila said he is growing onion on 29 decimal of land.

He expects some 19 maunds to 20 maunds of yield.
