JOYPURHAT, Feb 19: Early varieties of red stick potatoes, diamond and carriage potatoes are seen in the markets. Medium and large potatoes are being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg in various markets of Kalai upazila of Joypurhat. The potato farmers of the district are happy with the good price of early potatoes.

According to traders and farmers, the age of new potatoes that are currently seen in the market is maximum 60 days. After 50 days the size of potato starts to be medium. As a result, some farmers harvest potatoes in advance and market them.

Favourable weather has yielded good production of advanced red stick and white diamond and carriage potatoes. The potatoes are cultivated mostly in Udaipur, Punat, Kalai municipal area, Jindarpur and Matrai upazila.

About Taka 40000 have been spent on potato cultivation per bigha of land. Currently, potatoes are being sold in the wholesale market at Tk 15 per kg. Farmers hope to make up for last year's losses.

Potatoes have been cultivated on 10 thousand 620 hectares of land in Kalai this year. The production target has been set at 0.25 million tonnes.
