Fish farming in cages improves socio-economic condition of Kawnia cultivators

RANGPUR, Dec 27: Fish farming in cages has changed the financial condition of many cultivators at Kawnia upazila of the district in recent years.

A good number of farmers are engaged in cultivating monosex Tilapia, Pangas and Koi fishes in cages in the Hokodangar Beel (Lake) at Annoda Madhupur area in the upazila.

Farmers are showing their interest in cultivation of fish in cages as it is profitable. Low production cost and easy farming method also encouraged the farmers, sources said.

Alam Mia of Annoda Madhupur village in the upazila, said he cultivated Tilapia fish in cages this year and earned so far Tk 35,000 as profit.

Farmers are delighted with the output of aquaculture, which requires small time and effort to get results and have huge demand in the markets, he said.

Witnessing his success, many people of his area and his adjacent area getting interested in fish farming in cages, he also said.

Upazila Fisheries Office sources said cultivation of Tilapia and some other fishes in cages needs a small investment and effort which is very lucrative.

Farmers are given necessary suggestion and inputs for cultivating fish in cages, sources said.

The fishery officials have found the potentiality after assessing outcomes of a pilot project of cage fish culture along the Hokordanga Beel in the upazila, sources said.

Seeing success of such method unemployed youths, fishermen and local people are expected to be encouraged towards the method, sources added.
