PABNA, Mar 20: Fish farming in floating enclosures has turned into a profitable venture in the district. Hundreds of unemployment youth have attained financial solvency by fish cultivation under the method.
The modern method is gaining popularity for low cost, said farmer Hafizur Rahman of Ratonpur village of Panguli union under Faridpur upazila.
He said, "I cultivate fish in enclosure which is 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and 6.0 feet deep."
Cultivators make the enclosures with nets, bamboos, JI pipe and plastic drums. Each cage contains 20 feet in length and 10 feet in width, sources said.
To make an enclosure, farmers have to expend Tk 18,000 to Tk 20,000. Some 1000 to 1200 fishes can be cultivated easily in an enclosure, officials of the Fisheries Department said.
A fish farmer is able to make a net profit of Tk 30,000 to Tk 40,000 from one enclosure, the officials added.
According to the district Fisheries Department, farmers are using Boral, Hurasgar and Gumani rivers for fish cultivation.
District fisheries officer Abdur Rauf said farmers are cultivating varieties of fishes in Boral, Gumani, Ichhamati and Hurasagar rivers every season and earning a handsome profit.
In this connection, Karmasangsthan Bank disburses easy-term loan facilities among the poor fish farmers in the district.
