Fish output gets a boost in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Feb 12: Commercial fish farming is gaining popularity across the district as the government and non-government organisation has taken extension programmes to develop the sector.
Fish growers in the district attained success in fish production in the last couple of years after the Fisheries Department took diversified efforts to boost production there.
After meeting up local demand, varieties of fish are being transported to different districts across the country everyday.
Official sources said fish production has increased in Royganj, Kazipur, Kamarkhanda, Ullapara, Belkuchi and Sadar upazilas of the district recently. Fish cultivators are now attaining financial solvency.
"I have invested Tk 30,000 in my two ponds this season to produce varieties of fishes", said farmer Lokman Hossain of under Ullapara upazila. "I have already sold some five maunds of fish at Tk 32,000 and expecting to make Tk 0.1 million more", he added.
More than 60 tonnes of trout were released in internal water-bodies to increase fish production, said the officials of Fisheries Department. The department has provided registration and identity cards to the genuine fish cultivators for their betterment.
High official of the department said, "We have distributed eco-friendly nets among the fishermen. Fish cultivators are also provided necessary supports to boost fish production."
