Fish production rises in northern districts

RANGPUR, July 17 (BSS): Fish production in Rangpur district has been increasing by 3,500 tonnes annually as calculated by the officials concerned over the last five consecutive years.

Fish production in the district during 2018-2019 period was 53,053 tonnes which was 35,600 tonnes five years back, it vwas told at a press conference held here today marking beginning of the National Fisheries Week -2019.

District Fisheries Officer Barun Chandra Biswas highlighted the success achieved in the fishery sector. However, the district is still lagging far behind of total demand of the people of the district for 63,095 tonnes of fish a year, he said.

Speakers called for making the Fisheries Week a complete success to make people aware about the best use of water bodies and transferring latest technologies to farmers to enhance fish production.

They also laid importance on protection of native, small and indigenous varieties.

The Rajshahi district has produced more than 80,899.79 tonness of fishes last fiscal year against the demand for 58,858.75 tonnes.

The district has also attained significant success in fish spawn and fish fingerling production which are also surplus than the existing demand.

Alok Kumar Shaha, District Fisheries Officer, on Wednesday said this at a press conference at DC's conference room on inauguration of the National Fisheries Week' 2019 in the district.
