Flash flood inundates low-lying areas in Khagrachhari

KHAGRACHHARI, Sept 09 (BSS): Heavy upstream flash floods have inundated several low-lying areas of Mahalchhari upazila in Khagrachhari district, leaving more than 300 families marooned and disrupting normal life.

Local officials confirmed that Zubair,05, drowned while playing in the yard of his house in Kalopahar area of the district. He is the son of local resident Hafiz Shahidullah.

Water from the Chengi River has submerged Pakizachhari, Mosque Colony, Chattogram Para, Bridge Para, Sylheti Para, and Goru Bazar areas, with knee-to waist-deep flooding reported.

Hundreds of homes are partially underwater, forcing many residents to seek shelter elsewhere.

The Upazila Administration has opened a shelter centre at Islamia Madrasa under the upazila. A total of 25 people of six families have already taken refuge there.

Relief teams are delivering foods, medicines and other essentials door to door for the affected households.

Mahalchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Abu Raihan said the administration is closely monitoring the situation through a control room.
