LALMONIRHAT, Nov 03: Local farmers are now passing a busy time to cultivate winter vegetables to earn handsome profits.
As winter is knocking at the door, farmers are busy preparing croplands and caring vegetable plants, official sources say.
Many farmers earned huge profits by farming early varieties of vegetables whose prices are still high.
Growers of coriander, bitter guard, snake guard, brinjal, bottle guard, korola and green chilli have earned huge profits this year.
They are very happy with the fair prices of their produce this season.
Many farmers alleged that they never got fair prices of their crops in the past as middlemen and retailers always gained profits. While visiting some areas of Sadar and Aditmari upazilas in the district, this correspondent has found that farmers are working hard on croplands to produce vegetables.
There are eye-catching fields of various vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, bottle guard and brinjal.
A farmer of Digholtari village under Sadar upazila said he cultivated cauliflower on 30 decimals of land. Already, he started selling it in the market.
"Cauliflower price is very high. So, I am happy with its price."
Another farmer, Serajul Islam, of the same village said he cultivated cabbage and cauliflower on two bighas of land and will sell them in a week.
Sajjal Mia, who commercially cultivates brinjal, bottle guard and cauliflower every year, already earned high profits by the produce.
The prices of most vegetables this season are very high, making the farmers happy.
Al Amin, a vegetable trader of Mogolhat union, says, "I have started sending early variety of winter cauliflower to Dhaka as its demand is very high there."
Dr Shaikhul Arefin, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Lalmonirhat, said the soil of the district is very suitable for vegetable farming.
Many farmers have changed their economic condition by farming vegetables, he adds.
"This year, the prices of vegetable are very high, so farmers have got good returns from vegetables," he also said.
