GAIBANDHA, Sept 21: Farmers are tending to ginger cultivation through a sack method in the northern district.
Gaibandha is one of the agriculturally dependent districts. Apart from production of different crops in seven upazilas of the district, farmers are interested in ginger cultivation.
It is very easy to grow it in the yard of the house, around and in the fruit garden or in the shade under the trees. Day by day, ginger cultivation in sacks is being expanded at the farmer level.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Gaibandha, 97,588 sacks of ginger have been cultivated in 249 blocks in the district this year.
Last year, ginger was cultivated in 66,075 bags in the district.
Local farmers said they sowed ginger seeds in sacks by mixing agricultural materials with sufficient amount of soil. It reduces the risk of natural disasters, disease and care costs.
And because it can be cultivated very easily, they are benefiting by cultivating ginger in sacks.
Farmers said the production cost of ginger cultivation is Tk 75 to Tk 80 per bag. After production, up to 1 kg of ginger is available per bag.
At present, the market price of ginger is Tk 350 to Tk 400 per kg.
Rafiqul Islam, a farmer of Chakbarul village of Sadar Upazila, told the Financial Express, "I've grown 40 sacks of ginger in my yard. Expect to get 3 times more profit than the cost."
Gaibandha DAE Deputy Director Md Khorshed Alam told the FE that 97,588 sacks of ginger have been cultivated in 249 blocks in the district this year.
"In this method, the production cost is very low, so farmers are benefiting from ginger cultivation in sacks."
It also increases optimal use of fallow land. As ginger can be grown in sacks in the shaded fallow land under trees in the house yard, around and in various gardens, optimal utilization of these fallow lands is increasing, Mr Alam said.
"We're giving all kinds of support and advice to farmers to make them interested in ginger cultivation."
