Good jackfruit yield in Natore

NATORE, June 20: Bumper production and fair market price of jackfruit have made the farmers of the district happy this season.

According to the Natore Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, frequent rain since April helped get such good yield of the juicy fruit.

During a recent visit to different villages in the district, this correspondent came to know that commercial cultivation of jackfruit both at homesteads and orchards has popular among the farmers.

Farming of the item has been expanding for high profit.

Traders from different areas across the country have started visiting the district to purchase the fruit from the growers directly.

More than 2,500 jackfruit growers are there in the district and they can harvest the item from over 1,50,000 trees.

Shingra, Boraigram, Lalpur and Sadar upazilas of the district are well-known for growing quality jack fruit.

Golam Hossain of Borigram upazila said he planted around 50 trees on his land spending Tk 6,200 a few years ago. This year all of the trees have been carried a good jackfruit yield.

The grower said he has already made a profit of Tk 10,000.

Deputy Director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said harvest of the fruit has begun in the district from last week and it will continue till next month.

Good price will encourage the farmers to expand the fruit in the coming seasons, the official added.
