Gopalganj DAE targets to grow jute on 23,950 hectares of land

GOPALGANJ, May 26: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, has taken a massive programme to grow jute on 23,950 hectares of land this season.

According to official sources, decision has been taken to cultivate Tossa variety on 23,534 hectares and some local varieties on 416 hectares of land. Total jute production target for the district is 2,86,841 tonnes.

Sources said some 1,25,000 people are involved in cultivating jute in the district.

Farmer Rabiul Sikder of Chandradighalia village under Gopalganj Sadar said he is cultivating jute (JRO-524) on two bighas of land this season. The farmer expects a good production this season.

Debdas Mallik, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Suktail block, said JRO-524 is popular variety among the farmers of the district as it is high yielding and requires low cost.

Jute cultivation is gaining popularity in the district as the growers have been have been making a handsome profit from the farming of the cash crop in recent times. Every year farmers in the area bring a vast tract of land under the production of jute due to a good production and fair market price.

Samir Kumar Gowswami, deputy director (Agriculture), Gopalganj, said jute farming is profitable. The DAE provides all necessary support to the cultivators so that they could achieve a good yield.
