GOPALGANJ, Jan 30: Farmers of Jalalabad union under Sadar upazila of the district are expecting a bumper production of BARI Musur-6 this year.
Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) invented this highly productive BARI Musur-6 which marked a sharp rise since last three years among the farmers in this region.
Rabi Biswas (60), a farmer of village Char Echhakhali under Jalalabad union of Sadar Upazila in Gopalganj told The FE that, he cultivated the crop on two bighas (104 decimals) of land this season spending Tk 10,500. This type of Musur is more profitable and I hope, I shall get six maunds of the crop which market price is about Tk 21,000.
Unless there is pest attack, a farmer with a small investment can achieve a big monetary benefit from this BARI Musur-6 farming, Rabi said during the visit in his field.
Santosh Biswas, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer of Echhakhali block under Jalalabad union of Sadar Upazila said, for farmers of this region, cultivation of BARI Musur-6 is more profitable because soil and weather condition in this area are favourable. As a result, they expect bumper production from this crop, Santosh added.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension Department (DAE), Gopalganj officials, a total of 3,500 hectares of land have been brought under BARI Musur-6 cultivation and production target is 4,900 tonnes.
Of them 1,208 hectares of land have been brought under Sadar upazila, and 80 hectares in Jalalabad union.
Samir Kumar Gowshami, Deputy Director (DD), Agriculture, Gopalganj told The FE that, BARI Musur-6 is more profitable compared to any other crop.
