CHATTOGRAM, July 28: The government extended the ban on fishing in the Kaptai Lake for 10 more days till August 10.

Fishing will be permitted from August 11, according to a decision taken in a meeting held at the Rangamati Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday.

Commander Md. Faiz Al Karim, manager, Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), Rangamati branch, confirmed the matter.

To ensure the natural breeding and safe reproduction of fish, the ban on all types of fishing in the Kaptai Lake was in effect from April 24 midnight.

Sources said, the administration was set to breed 2.5 tonnes of carp at Kaptai Lake in the current month due to which the ban was put in place. Wholesale fish depots will remain closed and anyone defying the ban had been warned of legal action.

Law enforcement will be on patrol and a mobile court was operating to punish anyone fishing illegally, sources also said.

Fish produced in the lake meets local demand and is also supplied to the capital and other parts of the country. The average annual production of fish in the lake is more than 7,000 tonnes.
