Govt moves to excavate 12 canals in 11 Sunamganj UZs

SYLHET, Oct 22: The government has taken up a programme to excavating 12 canals in 11 upazilas of Sunamganj on priority basis.

The total cost has been estimated to be about 200 million, an official informed.

These include Dholai river in Sunamganj Sadar at a cost of Tk 32.55 million for water recession from Kanglar Haor and Noukakhali Haor in the same upazila for recession of waters from the Joalbhanga Haor at a cost of Tk 15.69 million.

Dhamalia canal in Biswambharpur upazila at a cost of Tk 29.37 million for recession of waters from Angaruli and Korchar Haor to the Surma river, Ratlar canal in Jamalganj uapzila at a cost of Tk 17.29 million for recession of water from Halir Haor to the Surma via Boulai river.

Ahmakkhali canal in Tahirpur upazila at a cost of Tk 3.36 million for recession of water from Shonir Haor in Tahirpur uapzila to the Surma through Abua and upper Boulai rivers and Chandpur canal from Rajapur to recede water to the Surma through Kangsha at a cost of Tk 13.85 million in Dharmapasha upazila.

Besdies, Goladair canal in Chhatak uapzila would be excavated at a cost of Tk 5.1 million while the Itakhola canal in Jogonnathpur upazila at a cost of Tk 19.9 million for recession of water from Noluar Haor.

For receding water from Dekhar Haor, the Nainda river in Dakshin Sunamganj upazila would be excavated at a cost of Tk 24.9 million while the Monjuri Haor in Derai upazila would be excavated at a cost of Tk 3.45 million for receding water Huramondira Haor to Old Surma and the Abrar Khal in Shulla upazila would be excavated at a cost of Tk 6.78 million for receding water from Chhayar Haor to Old Surma.

Besides, Raili Sunubhanga canal in Doarabazar uapzila would be excavated at a cost of Tk 25 million.

Executive engineer of the WDB, Sunamganj Abu Bakar Siddique said excavation of the canals include two in the Sunamganj Sadar and one each in rest of the upazilas have been selected at the first phase.

The canals had not been excavated even in decades, reducing the navigability of rivers and water stagnation on the haors, the official added.
