Govt to start rice procurement in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, May 16: Preparation for government procurement of rice has almost been completed. The government would procure 15,796 tons of rice in this Boro season in Nilphamari district. Out of which 6,467 tons of rice would be procure from sadar upazila, 1,876 tons from Saidpur upazila, 2,158 tons from Domar upazila, 3,479 tons form Jaldhaka upazila, 1,540 tons from Dimla upazila and 276 tons from Kishorgonj upazila. Rice would be procured in the concern local supply depot (LSD) of the upazila.

District Controller (DC) of Food office Nilphamari Kazi Saifuddin Ahamed said rice would be procured from the month of May to August 31. In the meantime a total of 604 mills of the district has been contracted to supply rice to the government. They include both auto rice mills and husky rice mills. All the 12 auto rice mills of the district has been contracted to supply rice. The government would procure parboiled rice at a price of tk 38 per kg.

Consequently there created frustration and agitation among the growers for the government decision of not to procure paddy directly from the growers.

Sources said Nilphamari district produces huge amount of surplus paddy every year. In the meantime price of paddy has come down to Tk 560 per maund (40) kg in the markets.

DAE sources said production of Boro in this season is 3,29,671 tons in the district.
