Green chilly prices rise in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, July 07: The prices of green chilly have abnormally increased in different markets in the district recently.

According to a market survey of Friday one kilogram of green chilly is being selling at the rate of Tk 220 to Tk 240 which was Tk 100 to Tk 120 one week back only.

Omar Sheikh (60), a market-man (locally call haturia) of Bedgram adjacent of Gopalganj town told this correspondent that because of this abnormal price poor people cannot purchase chilly. As a result the low income groups like land less people, day labourers and rickshaw puller the worst sufferers.

Amir Hawlader (50), a local trader said, we could not purchasing chilly from mokam because of heavy crisis.

Sadem Khan (60), another trader (Aratdar), Gopalganj Natun Bazar of the city told the FE that huge green chilly fields in this season are damaged by recent rain. As a result heavy crisis was made in mokam. So that chilly price abnormally rose up in the markets, Sadem said.

Samir Kumar Gowshami, Deputy Director (DD), Agriculture, Gopalganj told the FE at total of 280 hectares of land have been brought under green chilly cultivation and production target at 412 metric tonnes (MT) this current year which normally meet up our demand for the district. In this circumstances I think dishonest traders should be guilty for price shot up of chilly and they making a syndicate for more benefit, he added.
