Growers expect good yield of tomato in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Feb 06: The tomato growers under the district are in joyous mood as they are getting good yield of their produce this year.
According to sources, harvesting of tomato is going on in full swing across the region and the growers have been earning a good profit from selling their produce in markets since very beginning of the season.
A good number of growers said that with the hope to earn handsome profit, they cultivated tomato this year because they failed to make satisfactory profit from farming of many other crops. At the initial stage of harvest growers got handsome profit. Subsequently its price declined with abundant supply, they also said.
Monir Hosssain, a tomato grower of Palichara area in Rangpur sadar upazila told this FE correspondent that he cultivated tomato on 40 decimals of land during this current season.
He has already earned over Tk 20,000 by selling his produce and is expecting to earn more profit during the rest of the time, he added.
Hafizul Mia, another farmer of Rupshi village at Ranipukur union in Mithapukur upazila told this FE correspondent that he has cultivated tomato on 35 decimals of land.
Due to early harvest he could make satisfactory profit from its sale in markets. He also expressed satisfaction over plentiful production of the crop this year.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said the farming of tomato is on the rise across the region owing to huge demands and profit.
DAE also encourages the peasants by providing them necessary suggestions and agro-inputs. The soil of many areas in the district is very much suitable for vegetables cultivation, sources further said.
Growers are given necessary advice and assistance by the DAE officials in this regard. Use of modern technologies also enhanced yield of different varieties of vegetables including tomato in recent years, sources added.
