A farmer taking care of his guava orchard at Shibganj in Bogura — FE Photo BOGURA, Jan 07: Guava farming is getting popular gradually across all 12 upazilas of the district for the last few years.
A good number of farmers in the region have shifted to guava farming from paddy, vegetable and potato as the fruit cultivation has proved them more lucrative spending a small amount of money.
On the other hand, the fruit brings good returns compare to other long- term fruit and vegetable cultivation in an easy way without any hassle.
In a recent visit to different areas, this correspondent found farmers are passing busy time rearing their fruit orchards braving adverse weather condition from the very early morning to late at night. They are selling the fruit at Tk 50 to 70 per kg in the retail market while Tk 40 to 50 in the wholesale markets against Tk 30 to 35 per kg production cost.
"I use pheromone trap in my guava crop orchard to drive fungal spots instead of spraying pesticides," said farmer Hamidul Islam under Shajahanpur upazila. "Besides, I wrap each fruit in food-grade poly bags to keep insecticides away." he added.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office informed, the water-stressed Barind region is perfect for growing guavas, which require a tenth of the water compared with traditional crops.
Another farmer Abdur Rahim under Shibganj upazila said he has already cultivated the fruit on 34 decimal of land this season spending Tk 15,000 and made over Tk 40,000. He is expecting to make over Tk 30,000 as profit from the farm if the price remains good till next month.
Sub-assistant Agriculture Officer Faridur Rahman said guava trees bear fruit round the year but the farmers can make good profit in the winter season. We have provided all sortss of necessary agri-input among the farmers, he added.
