BOGURA, Oct 16: Handloom factories in the district are on the verge of closure due to price hike of yarn and other raw materials against low market price of woven clothes.
Already about 1,000 weavers and workers have become unemployed and nearly 40 per cent handloom has remained inoperative in Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Dhunot, Shajahanpur, Sonatola and Sadar upazilas for the last few years.
Over 1,200 families of Saoul Bazar under Adamdighi upazila are passing their days without any income for the price hike of yarn.
President of the Saoul Bazar Weavers Association Riazul Islam said, "Weavers of lungi, gamchha, saree, bed sheet, napkin, towel and mosquito nets do not get fair price of their produce."
"A good number of weavers here are losing their interest in continuing this profession. High price of yarn and other materials frustrate them", he added.
"The government should take immediate steps in this regard so that we can survive", weaver Shafiqul under Adamdighi upazila said.
